A Human Capability Perspective on the Progression of Low-SES Students to Higher Education in Ireland and the UK

This article focuses on targeted programs for low-SES students in two selective universities: Trinity College Dublin, the University of Ireland (Trinity Access Programmes/TAP) and Oxford, UK (Lady Margaret Hall Foundation Year/LMH FY). The were collaborative developments, as examples potential learning adaptation across geographical contexts. It poses questions: (a) How did admissions processes both universities change to target students? (b) do social academic support services students, provided by universities, contribute development student capabilities? draws capability approach evaluative lens used explore programs. Findings indicate innovative approaches socio-economic assessment programs, resulting effective targeting scaling beyond their initial remit (c) emergence specific capabilities through engagement
